After a steady decline in the smoking rate over the last several years, the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said recently that the rate decrease has leveled off at about 21% of adults. (This compares to about 42% back in 1964 when the link was first made to smoking and cancer)So about 80 percent of American adults are getting it, and have chosen to be a non smoker.
About 438,000 Americans die each year because of tobacco use, the CDC said. The agency estimated that for every death, there are 20 people living with a tobacco-related illness.
Dr. Matt McKenna, director of the CDC's Office on Smoking and Health, said "Smoking is still the No. 1 preventable cause of death, no other behavior kills so many people as tobacco, even with these low levels." A CDC report further states that "With appropriate support and efforts and counter-marketing, tens of thousands of people don't have to die."
